A Tale of Two Departments

Wabash has left an incredible impact on me in a number of ways from the new things I learned, the new people I met, and the lessons I learned. Two years go buy in the blink of an eye, but a lot can happen in two years as well.

Radio Ga ga

I came into the Radio and TV department with no experience at all, so there was very quick learning curve. There was so much to learn: voice tracking, live radio shifts, and RIS shifts on campus, announcing sports games and working the camera, switcher and board. I obviously wasn't completely left to sink or swim, and I definitely had to learn to walk before I could run. But now, I can confidently say I can navigate most of these jobs going forward. Not only did I gain valuable experience, I met some truly awesome people including my teacher Kyle Peach who has always been incredibly patient with me. I'm not the most passionate about the technical side of things. However, it is very important for me to know going forward, and I'm happy I chose this department.

The Play Is THe Thing

Theatre was much more of a comfortable fit going into it but not perfect. I truly learned how to thrive as a vocalist at WVC with the help of my vocal coach Mikayla Beck. I got to perform five times in two years and assistant direct a play. From working with kiddos and seeing their passion for the stage bloom to being in one of the first groups in years to perform at Wabash once again, I've had so many challenging new experiences I wouldn't have been able to enjoy otherwise. I've always enjoyed performing and hope to continue to do so.

People, Places, and things

My favorite part of Wabash Valley College has been the people, and it's not even close. It's fair to say the group we've made together here has been a treasure. From helping each other study for radio quizzes and carpooling to sports games together to late night road trips and theater practices, most of my favorite people were able to merge when we wanted to start a weekly Dungeons and Dragons group together. We created some real chaotic characters together. I got to see one of my friends get married and will soon see another. All these people mean a great deal to me, and in the coming years I will miss them all dearly.
