Summer Young Adult reading

Do you like reading and want some book recommendations for the summer? Two on my favorite book genres are young adult romance and mystery. Throughout this blog post, I'll give you book recommendations from my read list and my "to be read" (TBR) list.

Romance

1. The Selection Series

The Selection series started me on my reading journey. If looking for a cute romance and a quick read, The Selection series is perfect. Kiera Cass the author of The Selection is a #1 New York Times bestseller author. While The Selection Series is her best-known and most famous book, her other works entail The Siren (a stand-alone), The Betrothed, and The Betrayed (two-book series), and her newest release, A Thousand Heartbeats (a stand-alone).

The series can be summed up with the following statement.

"A cross between The Hunger Games (minus the bloodsport) and The Bachelor (minus the bloodsport)." - Publisher Weekly

2. The Summer I Turned Pretty

The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy written by Jenny Han has now become a popular Amazon Prime series. However, I have not watched the series yet. Book one of the series, The Summer I Turned Pretty was a quick read for me. I finished it in just a couple of days, and it is a summer read, for sure. I have not been able to read books two and three yet , but I am very excited to read them when I get the chance. Book two is titled It's Not Summer Without You and book three is We'll Always Have Summer. Jenny Hans also has another book trilogy title To All the Boys, that has been turned into three Netflix movies, a movie for each book.

3. On My Romance TBR List

A Thousand Heartbeats is Kiera Cass's newest book. I just got it a couple month ago, and sadly have not had the chance to read it yet. However, this is one of the first books I'll read when summer break is here.

Everyone probably knows the saying "don't judge a book by its cover." However, I am a person who judges a book by its cover. Kiera Cass is one of my favorite authors, and, as a visual person, this cover grabs my attention and further inspires me to read it.

Mystery

1. One Of Us Is Lying

THIS BOOK!!! It is the first book I ever read in this genre. I read it my senior year of high school for an assignment, where I had to keep pace with the other students in my group. I was so involved in this book that I so badly wanted to keep reading each night. Karen M. McManus is known for her mystery young adult books such as Two Can Keep a Secret and Nothing More to Tell. She has written and released seven books and another will be released in July 2023. One of us is Lying is also a two season show on Peacock.

2. A Good Girls Guide To Murder

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is a 400 page quick read. A school project turned messy. If wanting to dip your toe into a mystery and not sure where to start this is a great one to start with. This is the first book in the Holly Jackson series with the next book titled Good Girl, Bad Blood and the third book As Good as Dead. Some of her other work includes Kill Joy, a Good Girls Guide to Murder Novella, and Five Survive .

2. On My Mystery TBR List

One of Us is Next is the second book after One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. I hope to read this quickly when summer starts because the third book in the series comes out July 27, 2023. The One of Us is Lying series is something I probably would have never picked up to read if it wasn't for my senior advanced comprehensive class. After reading it, I discovered my love for a good mystery and became excited to read One of Us is Next and her new book title One of Us is Back which is available for pre-order.

A “breathless read” that’s “full of exciting and unexpected twists [that race] toward a shocking conclusion” — Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Books are able to take you places, let you see into people's lives, and help you escape from the crazy world we live in. The books I have read have truly done that for me. While the romance books pull on my heart strings, the mystery has my heart racing with what happens next. Books can take you on an adventure that you never thought you would go on.
