The Grey Lady Ghost of Willard Library

The Legacy of the Lady and the Library

In 1937, a night janitor at Willard Library was tending to his normal nightly duties, seemingly alone. As he made his way through the basement hallway, he saw a figure. A woman in a flowing dress walked in the hallway. He was supposed to be the only one there, so he called out to the figure, but she turned the corner and disappeared. It appeared as if she had never been there. The janitor reported it to his boss, but he was brushed off as he was just seeing things. After more sightings, still no one believed the janitor, and he left the library. No one else reported anything, so it seemed the story of this “grey lady”vanished with the janitor. Years later, reports began to pop up again. This ghostly apparition was more than hallucinations of a tired janitor; it was the beginning of a local legend.

Who is the Grey Lady?

In 1876, in hopes of making a lasting mark on Evansville, Willard Carpenter outlined plans for the Willard Library. Carpenter poured his heart and soul into this project. In an interview with Adult Services Librarian Arrika Taylor, she remarked “this was like his baby.” Sadly, he died before the library opened, never seeing it completed but leaving most of his wealth to the library. His family was less than thrilled about this; they felt like they deserved more. Some actually sued the library saying he was not of sound mind, but they lost the lawsuit. His daughter Louise Carpenter being one of them.

The identity of the Grey Lady remains a mystery, but there are theories. The most popular being Louise Carpenter.

The people that have seen her say that she's a female with her hair up in an up-do style, wearing a long, like, Victorian-style dress, and the picture that we have of Louise, matches that to a T.”

There is a story of a couple of ghost hunters visiting the library to look for the ghost. They stopped at a picture of Louise and one commented that she wasn’t very attractive. After the comment, during their visit the ghost hunter felt uneasy.

Ghost sightings

Most frequently the ghost has been seen from people outside the building. Night shift workers from the neighboring building report seeing someone walking around inside or the lights turning on and off when the library is closed. Taylor shared an experience she had herself. She and a group of coworkers were closing and leaving together. From the parking lot they saw light on in one room. They all knew that everything had been turned off before they left. They went back in and not only were all the lights on, but so were the computers.

While there have only been a handful of visual sightings, there have been numerous accounts of encounters. People have reported seeing mists or orbs, experiencing cold chills in rooms, smelling an old-fashioned perfume, as well as books being thrown off shelves and moving chairs around. “It's not scary, I promise. People do report seeing things all the time, whether it's day or night.” Taylor assured.

“It's never been a scary, threatening presence. It's always just a whoa kind of thing.”

Willard Library’s sightings and encounters have not been confined to the building itself. On their website,

they have ghost cams, cameras that are set up throughout the building so people can search for the place’s poltergeist. They have had reports of sightings of the ghost online and shared them with library staff. “People take screenshots and send them to us all the time, which is kind of fun just to see what's going on, ” Taylor added.

More than a Ghost

The Grey Lady of Willard Library is more than a spooky story; she is a part of the library. Visitors come in daily and ask the staff to hear new stories of the ghost. Willard isn’t just a library that happens to have a ghost; the Grey Lady is a part of the library. “I've been here now 10 years, and I just feel like it's part of the character of the place,” Taylor shared with a warm smile.

What starts as intrigue about a ghost, strolling the shelves to see a book get thrown off the shelf, turns

into seeing a book that catches your eye. Louise Carpenter, daughter of the founder of the library, may very well be the Grey Lady wandering the halls of his library, drawing people in to be a part of what her father created, encouraging them to experience the joy of reading, as well as giving them countless resources.

She's definitely helped us over the years to gain traction and get people in the door, which is the goal. But, yeah, I think overall it's, we're trying to work together,”
