WVC Theater Tech Camp Makes a Grand Debut!

Looking to experience behind-the-scenes work for theater? Well, look no further than Wabash Valley College's Theater Tech Camp. Hosted by house technician Luke Bunting, students in grades 6-12 can step into the theater world with our exciting, hands-on camp. This event will allow students the opportunity to experience the joys of theater, music, or even church production!

WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO:

Starting this June, students will explore:

  • Learning how to use the equipment

  • Running and operating a soundboard

  • Running programming lights during concerts and theater productions

  • Running the program itself

Hosted in the Brubeck Arts Center at Wabash Valley College, students will be able to learn how to do these things hands-on, as well as learn how to use the equipment, as mentioned above. Bunting is quoted, saying that "Lecture time is important, but hands-on experience is the most important thing with this kind of tech."

Speaking of "this tech", everything students will be working with is pictured below:

Pictured above is the sound mixer, which allows students to change the volume output of the sound coming from the speakers, as well as music beds or sound effects.

The lighting console (also pictured above) which students will use to control the lights and make the stage dimmer or brighter.

The switchboard, which students will use to control where the production is being viewed. This can also be used to control the audio mixing, as well as chroma keys and visual effects.

The spotlight. There are two of these, though this is the rightmost one. Students will use this to light the actors on the stage. Pictured in the window is the catwalk that has more spotlights. This particular job may not be suitable to those who are scared of heights!

Will students love this camp?

As this camp is completely new, we wouldn’t be able to tell you. Hopefully, yes! While we are not expecting to see a whole lot of people in this initial year, we are expecting to see the number of participants grow in the following years. There are 14 students in the regular theater program currently, and all are expected to be here as well.

The skills learned in this camp are not limited only to theater! Campers here can use their skills to help with church or even for personal projects!

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Work in a professional setting

  • Meet other people with similar interests

  • Gain experience in working with production tools

  • Learn basic production techniques

  • Build communication skills

Spots may fill quickly!

Theater Tech offers an opportunity for junior and high school students to experience the world of theater in a fun, supportive environment. Students interested in assisting theater productions are encouraged to register early.
