A Course review: Cambridge Golf Club

Playing a new golf course is always fun, nerve racking, and exciting. I can safely say I was feeling all of those while walking up to the first tee box at Cambridge Golf Course in northern Evansville, Indiana.

Throughout this review, I will judge the area the course is located, the condition it is in, and the layout of the holes.

Location

This course at first glance is as beautiful as it gets. The 18-hole championship course is nestled in the middle of a neighborhood that is about two miles off US-41.

This allows for a secluded and private round of golf that is only interrupted by the other players on the course. When there are no houses surrounding the holes, it is farmland on either side. This golf haven is perfect for those who enjoy a quiet time on the course.

Condition

Before I get started on critiquing the condition of Cambridge, I must preface by saying I played it on a February day when there was rain just a couple of days prior.

Given that information, the groundskeepers did a fantastic job keeping it in superb playing condition even with the circumstances they were under. The fairways were short and dry. This rewarded players who striped one off the tee with good lays and great looks at the greens. The rough, because of the winter months, were short as well. This meant that when I missed a fairway off the tee it wasn’t as bad of a look as what it normally would have been. There were, though, a couple of times where the rough was wet and muddy due to the rain a few days prior which still gave a strong challenge when missing fairways.

Finally, the greens were in great shape for the time of the year I played. This is probably the most difficult part of the course for an average player. They play fast and firm, even in the winter, with crazy tiers. On the Par 3 13th, for example, the green is big, but is layered with hills and surrounded by bunkers that slope down. This rewards players who have a nice iron in, but give a stiff challenge to those who miss.

This course was in excellent shape for the time of year I played it.

Layout

Cambridge offers probably the most challenging design in the Evansville area.

The 1st hole is straightforward and a good way to start a round. Hole 2, though, is the toughest on the course and will give even the best a bit of a shiver. Water surrounds the fairway on either side on this 535-yard par 5. I hit a hybrid off the tee, which I never thought would be great on a lengthy hole such as this, but it turned out great.

Right after that a 140-yard par 3 with water on the left is what players meet with. This, to me, is the hardest par 3 on the course. After this difficult 3-hole start, the challenge starts to taper down as much as it will. Golfers should expect a hard challenge when entering the arena with this championship course.

Conclusion

Cambridge Golf Course, in my opinion, is the nicest public course a golfer can play in the Evansville area.

It offers great service, a secluded round, and tough challenge for those seeking it. I would recommend this course to any who asked. The value is incredible for 18 and anyone who enjoys the sport and is in the area should give it a whirl.
